News from Kathi C.

Ruth writes:

I heard from Kathi that her mother passed away Monday, July 31st.  She was 98 and had been at Presidential Oaks since before the pandemic.  Kathi's mom's funeral will be this Saturday, August 5th at 11 a.m. at the First Congregational Church, 24 Main St, Pittsfield, NH. (Obituary)

In addition, Kathi has had surgery for colon cancer; it was successful in removing the tumor and she has learned that it has not spread to her lymph nodes.  However, there was a complication in that her spleen was damaged and removed, and her pancreas was nicked and has been leaking a little.  They are hopeful that the pancreas will heal itself and are monitoring that.  Kathi has been walking and feeling OK and otherwise healing.

Prayers for Kathi's complete healing are appreciated.

Hands on History Presentation in Center Sandwich on August 12

The North Sandwich Friends (Quaker) Meeting in partnership with Old Friends Genealogy invites the community of Sandwich and any other interested individuals to gather at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 12 at the Benz Center located at 18 Heard Road in Center Sandwich.  A Power Point presentation will be used to describe highlights of the recently completed “Hands on History” community project spearheaded and organized by the North Sandwich Friends Meeting.  This project featured substantial work related to the Religious Society of Friends (1776) burial ground at the base of Wentworth Hill in Center Sandwich including work inside the “stonewalls" by Sandwich Central Elementary students and volunteers as well as education and research outside the walls of the burial ground.

Old Friends Genealogy (Mike and Kate Lancor of Moultonborough) collected information from the inscriptions on gravestones in the burial ground and reviewed previously recorded maps and cemetery logs before proceeding with extensive genealogy research for those known to be buried in the burial ground.  Ancestry.com was used as a platform to develop family trees for those buried there.  Profile pages were created for each individual buried identifying other relatives (e.g. mother, father, spouse, siblings, children) also buried in the same burial ground.  The Power Point presentation will include sharing examples of the profiles developed through genealogy research for several families and individuals "at rest” in this Quaker Cemetery.

In addition, information on the appropriate methods of cleaning and preserving grave stones will be presented in hopes that other organizations will become involved in efforts to "bring back to life” and restore gravestones in the multitude of old graveyards and burial grounds scattered throughout Sandwich and communities throughout the Lakes Region.

Special appreciation to the all community volunteers, The North Sandwich Friends (Quaker) Meeting, The Sandwich Historical Society, Bollinger Associates (Chip Bollinger), Sandwich Central School administration, teachers and students, and Old Friends Genealogy for participating.  Thanks also to the Quimby Trust for partially funding this project.  Anyone interested in more information about this presentation on Saturday, August 12 can call Mike Lancor (603-204-8409) or Susan Wiley (603-677-2634 ). Some Quaker Trivia:

John Cadbury (1801 – 1889) was an English businessman and Quaker who founded Cadbury’s chocolate.  Cadbury also created a model housing estate for his workers in Bournville, Birmingham.  He also campaigned against cruelty to animals forming the Animals Friend Society, a precursor to the RSPCA.

James Dean (1931 – 1955) Brought up by aunt and uncle from the age of nine, in their Quaker household.  Dean was an influential American actor from Indiana. He starred in the film Rebel Without a Cause (1955) a symbol of teenage disillusionment.

Dame Judy Dench (1934 – ) Born and raised a Quaker, Dench says that her Quaker religion informs her whole outlook on life.  She is a leading English actress who has starred in numerous awarding winning – theatre, tv and film productions.

Joan Baez (1941 – ) Baez's family converted to Quaker beliefs when she was young.  She remained influenced by her Quaker beliefs in her social activism and political campaigning.  In the 1960s and 70s, her music inspired a generation of anti-war and anti-racism campaigners.

An Invitation to Annual Sessions of New England Yearly Meeting:

Friends around New England and beyond—you are invited to the 363rd Annual Sessions of New England Yearly Meeting, August 4–9, 2023!

Last year we pioneered hybrid sessions, with some of you attending at Castleton University, and others participating by Zoom. Continuing that successful experiment, our focus this year is building connections, strengthening local meetings, and practicing our faith together. Our schedule has been built with attention to creating time for sitting with old F/friends and making new ones.
