Our Booth at the Canterbury Fair July 30th

Kids Tent at the Canterbury Fair July 30 Update: Many thanks to Lynda Dyer who has donated her popup tent to the Meeting; we now have two tents which is all we need. We know of about 20 orphaned socks that will be become Sock Puppets for Peace at the kids tent, but we hope to have at least 20 more. Please search your drawer for those lonely socks and let Ruth know if you can bring some to the Meetinghouse by July 24 to be 'up-cycled' into puppets! Lastly, we need more people to sign up to help at the kids table. Examples and instructions will be provided - If I (Ruth) can do it, you can do it!

Adult Tent at the Fair: We have many slots open to help at the adult tent also! Please contact Susan L to let her know which one or two hour shift you can work between 9AM and 4PM. It's great fun and important outreach to potential attenders. We also need help with setup from 8-9 AM and taking the items back to the Meetinghouse at 4PM.

Wednesday Walkers

A Wednesday walk is scheduled for July 20th at 9:30 am at the Lehtinen Park and Jim Hill River Walk trail. This trail is one of the trails with a map you can find through the Concord City website. Or just use search terms “Concord New Hampshire trails” and look at map 2. This is an easy walk along the Contoocook River.

Directions to trailhead: Drive north on Rt 3, north of downtown Concord. Make a left on Bog Road which will cross the Contoocook River. Soon after that make a left on to Runnells Road. The Jim Hill River walk Trailhead is on the right near the end of Runnells. Please email Faith S to let her know you will be coming.

If you would like a bit more challenge to your walks or hikes, please contact Matt S. He has Mondays off on a pretty regular basis and would enjoy a walk with friends.

Stories of Our Spiritual Journeys

Join M&C outside after meeting for worship for stories about our spiritual journeys. We'll start on July 31st - bring a chair, your coffee, and your open heart.

7/20 - NH Acts for Yemen

Newsletter Addendum entry published 7/18:

Wednesday, July 20, 7-8 pm

Join NH Peace Action and the FCNL NH Advocacy Team to ask NH Representatives to help end the seven year war in Yemen by supporting H.J.Res. 87 (Directing the removal of US Armed Forces from hostilities in the Republic of Yemen that have not been authorized by Congress) and its companion bill, S.J.Res. 56, in the Senate. Expect a quick update on Yemen and the legislation, then writing, calling and further action to tell our Reps that we want them to support the Yemen War Powers Resolution.

7/24 - Film "The Hunger Ward" & Action for Yemen (4th Sunday Program and PSECC)

PSECC- Peace, Social, and Earth Care Concerns committee will have a hybrid program on the Fourth Sunday - July 24 at 1:00 pm. We are reaching out to the wider community to produce action for peace in Yemen. We will show the short film, Hunger Ward, about the humanitarian disaster in Yemen, which is being supported by US actions. The film highlights the effects of starvation on the children and will move you to action. We will have a short time for action, so you will leave with a sense of hope. The Friends Committee on National Legislation has been leading a concerted effort that is moving Congress to action, but some of our representatives are not yet on board. We need your help to persuade them. Please join us in person or on Zoom. Bring/tell your friends! Join us for a potluck meal around 12 too.

PSECC meets on Zoom on the third Thursday of the month starting August 18.

YRE - Summer Activities with Children on Sundays

We are hoping that Summer will bring some children to our Meeting and are preparing for their arrival. We will offer supervised play for any children that come and will need YRE Helpers for that purpose. This will happen inside or outside as the children and weather dictate. In the Fall we will also need helpers for the teachers when First Day School begins again. If you would like to help with this wonderful work, please reach out to Elaine and she will help you complete the vetting process so that your name can be added to the schedule.

Background Reading for Discernment about Investment of the Meeting’s Financial Reserves

Minute 07.05 (https://www.concordfriendsmeeting.org/2022-07-10_CMM_Minutes#07.05) of our recent meeting for worship with attention to business included the following paragraph:

The [Finance] committee also requested that there be a Meeting discernment around our attitudes and hopes for investment of the Meeting’s financial reserves. Friends approved planning this for a fourth Sunday in the near future. The committee and others are encouraged to provide Friends some reading suggestions to prepare themselves for this.

A useful place to begin may be Toward a Right Relationship with Finance: Debt, Interest, Growth, and Security (2016 – QIF #9). It is one of a series of books from the Quaker Institute of the Future (https://quakerinstitute.org/books/#RRF), which is available free for the download, but donations are welcome. You can read a review of the book in Friends Journal at https://www.friendsjournal.org/book/toward-right-relationship-finance-debt-interest-growth-security/

Memorial Minute for Chip Neal

During Dover Quarterly Meeting for 2nd quarter on 5th month 29, Wendy Berthiaume read the memorial minute for Chip Neal (https://www.concordfriendsmeeting.org/2022-05-29DoverQuarterlyMeeting#ChipNealMemorialMinute). In the minute there is a link to wonderful collection of interviews that Chip did with Silas Weeks that is available on YouTube. It was Silas Weeks who wrote a wonderful history of New England Quaker Meetinghouses: past and present, which contains a short history of Friends in Concord.

NEYM Part Time Position

New England Yearly Meeting is hiring. Thanks to funding from the Friends Foundation for the Aging, New England Yearly Meeting is partnering with New York Yearly Meeting to join the thriving Aging Resources Consultation and Help (ARCH) Program and to develop a New England-based wing of the program to serve New England Friends & meetings. We are now seeking a Friend to serve as the New England ARCH Coordinator to lead this effort. Could you help us spread the word about this opportunity with Friends in your meeting who might be interested in applying?

Does someone in your meeting community have a heart for accompanying others in their aging and end-of-life journey? Do you know of a Friend who naturally pays attention to the way the Spirit is at work in us as we age and attend to the aging process? Is someone in your meeting sensing a call to accompany Quaker meeting communities as well as individuals? If so, please invite them to consider this opportunity.

Through the facilitation of learning opportunities, workshops, and forums, the curation of resources, as well as direct visitation, accompaniment and referrals, the New England ARCH Coordinator will foster and equip a community of practice of Quakers in New England responding to both spiritual and logistical aging-related concerns in their local meetings and families.

This is a paid part-time/temporary position with an expectation of approximately 15-20 hours a month.

Friends who carry the following gifts are sought: ministry of presence, facilitation & ability to organize others, spiritual listening & accompaniment, recognizing & investing in the gifts of others, appreciation for and understanding of the human aging process, and interest in travel among Friends. No previous experience with ARCH is necessary. The full job description and application details are available at neym.org/jobs. Interested Friends may also contact ARCH Director Callie Janoff ( arch [at] neym [dot] org) or NEYM staff member Nia Thomas( Nia [at] neym [dot] org) if you would like to discuss the position before applying. The application deadline is August 23, 2022.

Thank you for helping to share about this opportunity.

In service, Nia Thomas, Quaker Practice & Leadership Facilitator NEYM
