Dover Quarterly Meeting

Presiding Clerk: Jay Smith (Assistant Clerk)

Recording Clerk: Sara Hubner

Dover Quarterly Meeting gathered at Concord Friends Meeting in Canterbury, with Friends from (2) and Concord (10).

Following a potluck lunch, Eleanor Cappa (Monadnock MM) told us about the work of the Yearly Meeting Committee on Aging and current issues on which it is working.

Meeting for the consideration of business began at approximately 12:20 p.m. with open worship.

12.1.1  Minutes of Seventh Month 2011 APPROVED, with the following corrections: Under monthly meeting news, the second item should read “Mark and Virginia Barker were married...”; and in the seventh item, Sandy Isaacs (not Isaac) reported.

Quarterly Meeting did not meet as scheduled on Tenth Month 31, 2011, due to a major snow storm.

12.1.2  Treasurer’s Report

Muriel Farrar presented her report for the calendar year 2011, which was accepted. The report is appended to these minutes.

12.1.3  Memorial Minutes

Gonic Friends presented the memorial minute for Shirley Leslie which is appended to these minutes. Quarterly Meeting ENDORSES the minute, which the Clerk will forward to Permanent Board. Gonic Friends will also forward the minute to USFW-NE.

Due to mischance, Concord was unable to present the memorial minute they have prepared for Don Booth. We agreed that the minute will be circulated via email for consideration so that we can forward it to Permanent Board in timely fashion.

12.1.4  NH AFSC

Arnie Alpert reported that there are still two staff people, he, and Maggie Fogarty. Among their current work are:

  1. Continuing the newsletter, State House Watch
  2. Working on economic justice issues with other faith communities
  3. Advocating for construction workers at The Cottages development in Durham, N.H. The workers have not been paid since Tenth Month 2011. NH AFSC is also providing accompaniment for some of the workers who are undocumented. Last week they organized a press conference in Durham and then marched to the offices for The Cottages, where they spoke with a senior vice president for the developer. NH AFSC anticipates a wage agreement will be announced on Second Month 6.
  4. In Third Month, Arnie is leading a delegation to Oaxaca for Witness for Peace.
  5. AFSC is consolidating its regional organizations and will change from 9 regions to 4. Sometime this summer, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and New England will merge into a Northeast Region office. It hasn’t been decided yet where the physical office will be located, but it is likely to be either in New York or Philadelphia.

12.1.5  Plans for Next Meeting

Our next gathering will be Fourth Month 29. In our last meeting, we tentatively planned to meet at Weare and provide a children’s program. For the adult program, we agreed that we will ask Friends returning from Oaxaca to report on their trip.

After some discussion whether Weare was the right place to meet in April, due to weather considerations, and whether there would be enough space for children, we agreed to contact Weare Friends to confirm their willingness to host before continuing with plans for a children’s program.

Kathy Urie of Concord Meeting volunteered to help coordinate a children’s program. Sara Hubner volunteered to assist by contacting Weare Friends and providing email addresses and/or phone numbers of religious education committee members for Kathy to contact for help. One suggestion for program content was to coordinate with NH AFSC for a topic and other help.

After a period of open worship, Meeting rose, purposing to meet Fourth Month 29, God willing.

Respectfully submitted,

Sara Hubner
