Correction Regarding Property Across the Road

There is an application to the Board of Adjustment to operate a “specialized firearm repair, modify, design, build business …. To purchase and to manufacture & deal in Title II firearms” in the new building that is being constructed to the south and east of the meetinghouse rather than on the property across the road as previously reported. Presumably we will want to prayerfully consider a response to this application in our Meeting for Business. Rich would be happy to work with interested Friends to consider possible responses. The ZBA hearing will be Wednesday 2/22/23 7PM.

Title II firearms pertains to machine guns, short or "sawed-off" shotguns and rifles, and so-called destructive devices (including grenades, mortars, rocket launchers, large projectiles, and other heavy ordnance).

How Friends Can Make Reparations for Quaker-Run Indigenous Boarding Schools

by Sharlee DiMenichi (link to full article)

Friends across the country are reckoning with historic Quaker involvement in Native American boarding schools. The Quakers who worked at and financially supported the schools felt obligated to teach Indigenous children English, so they could fend for themselves among European settlers. Friends also believed they were “civilizing” Native children by indoctrinating them into Western culture, according to letters, journals, and articles researched by Paula Palmer, co-director of Toward Right Relationship With Native Peoples, a ministry of Friends Peace Teams.

Palmer spent four months at Swarthmore and Haverford colleges in Pennsylvania researching Quaker support and financing of Native American boarding schools. … She cried a lot while reading the letters and journals of Friends who worked for, or otherwise supported, the boarding schools. Quaker staff and funders of the institutions felt certain that they were helping the students. In fact, the schools deeply harmed children, families, and communities, Palmer said.

In reply to this article John Hall wrote: Another egregious act by the Quakers was the Penn Family "Walking Purchase". Approximately 2006 the US Supreme Court refused to hear the case on appeal. For information regarding the "Walking Purchase" readers may want to follow this link to a Wikipedia article.

Closing and Boiler Schedule

Jennifer is working on an update to the closing and boiler cleaning schedule.  If you would like to participate in either of these important services to the meeting, please contact her.

YRE / Yard Sale, May 13

Please keep an eye out around your house for excess goods that could repurposed for use by others. Setting them aside now will help smooth the work in May. We are raising funds to support a family through Friends of Kenya Rising. Meet the Asonga family here. Did you know that Christina Imbiti and her family have graduated from the program? They are now living in much improved circumstances as a result of their hard work and participation in the FKR program. Supporting the yard sale is one way to have an impact far away for the Asongas and close at hand, building and demonstrating community solidarity.
